There are several schools of thought on The Peppermint Patty. Sure she likes “Chuck,” but she’s really boy-like and she’s always hanging around with Marci, who’s obviously her extreme intellectual superior. Smart kids and athletic kids typically don’t pal around in the real world, but these two have something in common that’s kept off-screen. Marci incidentally, also crushes on Charles. So it could be the mutual interest in the same boy that draws them together, or it could be that Marci and Peppermint Patty are a couple who are thinking about the possibility of expanding their horizons and so they’re feeling out the waters with CB. An interesting theory, except that the peanuts gang are all around eight years old, and “swinging” is slightly outside of their demo.
All that being said, the candy that shares her name is not confusing at all. Sure there are many versions of the magical combination of mint and chocolate that have tried their best to cloud the scene. There are peppermint candies, peppermint after dinner thingies, there’s peppermint bark, and of course there’s the ever popular Junior Mint.
When we’re talking about a peppermint patty though, aren’t we all really talking about the same thing? That’s right, the York Peppermint Patty from the York Cone Company out of Pennsylvania, that came about in the 1940s.
A York Peppermint Patty, and I’m talking about the big daddy, not those silly mini versions and “bites” that come in a bag marked “fun pack!” There’s no joy in a fun pack! These things trick you into thinking that you’re eating just one or two little ones, but you know damn well you’re going to eat nine of them! I say, if you’re going to enjoy a York Peppermint Patty, eat the patty! The one that’s the size and thickness of a McDonald’s hamburger patty.
I find it’s best to eat the York Peppermint Patty in quiet seclusion. Respect the patty. It’s not your run of the mill grab and go candy bar. It should be experienced over a 5-10 minute time period, taking little tiny bites. It’s quite cooling and refreshing. Another reason it’s best to eat them while alone, is if you’re like me and you grew up with the York Peppermint Patty commercialss from the 90s. I personally can’t eat one without getting the sensation of mounting my long board and hanging ten inside a sweet barrel ride! Cowabunga!!
